Mock Trial
Mock Trial Tournament
Rhode Island Legal/Educational Partnership
introduced the Mock Trial Tournament (MTT) to Rhode Island in 1984 to help high
school students develop an understanding of the workings of the judicial system.
Three years later, the Partnership became the first law-related education agency
in the country to establish a separate tournament for middle and junior high
school students.
Students enter the tournament by forming teams.
Then they use a hypothetical case to develop legal strategies and assume the
roles of attorneys and witnesses.
Members of the judiciary preside at the mock
trials in courtrooms from Providence to Newport, in Federal and State courts,
and at the Naval Justice School. Attorneys, acting as performance judges, score
the proceedings and decide the results. To prepare for court, students practice
courtroom procedures and protocol; learn to evaluate and present evidence; and
use teamwork to develop polished presentations.
Students who participate in the tournament gain
and refine important life skills such as problem solving, reading, listening,
public speaking, logical and critical thinking, researching, and dispute
resolution, while learning about the legal system. Participating in the
tournament also allows students to develop self-confidence in ways that
classroom learning alone cannot replicate.
Twenty-four years after it began, the tournament
remains a unique educational experience that has the power to motivate students
to excel in school and in life.
